Inspector Morse (TV series)

Inspector Morse is a British detective drama television series based on a series of novels by Colin Dexter. It starred John Thaw as Detective Chief Inspector Morse, and Kevin Whately as Sergeant Lewis. The series comprises 33 two-hour episodes ( minutes excluding commercials) produced between 6 January and 15 November Dexter made uncredited cameo appearances in all but three of the episodes.

In , the series was named the greatest British crime drama of all time by Radio Times readers.[1] In , the series was ranked 42 on the Greatest British Television Programmes compiled by the British Film Institute.

It was followed by the spin-off Lewis, and the prequel Endeavour.

Overview

The series was made by Zenith Productions for Central Independent Television, and first shown in the UK on the ITV network of regional broadcasters. Between and the commissioning company was Carlton Television, and towards the end of the series it was a joint venture by Carlton and WGBH.

Every episode involved a new murder investigation and depicted a complete story. Writer Anthony Minghella scripted

John Edward Thaw (3 January – 21 February ) was an English actor in television, scen and cinema, best known for his starring roles in the television series Inspector Morse as Detective Chief Inspector Endeavour Morse and in The Sweeney as Detective Inspector Jack Regan.

For four consecutive years Thaw was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor for playing Morse, winning in and [1] In , he was also nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the rulle Cry Freedom and in was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship.[2]

Early life

Born in Gorton, Manchester, to John Edward ("Jack") Thaw, a tool-setter at the Fairey Aviation Company aircraft factory, later a long-distance lorry driver, and Dorothy (née Ablott).[3] Dorothy left when he was sju years old. He and his younger brother, Raymond Stuart (Ray) had a difficult childhood due to their father's long absences. Thaw grew up in Gorton and Burnage, attending the Ducie Technical High School for Boys, gaining just one O level. He entered the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at the age of 16 (two years underage), and won the Acad

Den 18 mars ägnades ett avsnitt av den brittiska upplagan av This Is Your Life åt John Thaw. Thaw avled i cancer 60 år gammal
